This heart surgeon has a big heart. Dr Devi Prasad Shetty has conducted about 4,000 free pediatric heart surgeries. His hospitals provide free care for poor children. He has trained many family members of patients to care for patients after the surgery. Eliminating many pre-ops testing, he has pioneered low-cost diagnostic services.
Dr Shetty’s heart surgeries cost much less than in U.S. Compared to one or two surgeries in a day performed by doctors in U.S. hospitals, his doctors perform 30-35 surgeries a day! He believes the cost of healthcare can be reduced by 50 per cent in the next 5-10 years if hospitals adopt the idea of economies of scale.
The poor in India call him “Bypasswalla Baba”. In 2009, the Wall Street Journal described him as the “Henry Ford of heart surgery”.
