The Door to Hell!

Darvaza Crater in Turkmenistan

The Darvaza Crater or the Door to Hell is a fiery crater in the desert of northern Turkmenistan, likely the result of a drilling mishap. The crater which is 225 feet wide and 99 feet deep is noted for its natural gas fire which has been burning continuously since it was lit by Soviet petrochemical engineers in 1971 — that’s over 40 years! Perhaps they underestimated the amount of fuel that lay below; Turkmenistan has the sixth largest natural gas reserves in the world.
