Lionel Messi: Argentina has a New Super Star
Strange are the ways of the world of soccer. Mbappe of France scores four goals in the final match of the football World Cup 2022; he is awarded the Golden Boot for being the highest goal scorer of the tournament and moves into oblivion. Messi of Argentina scores only three goals in the final match, gets the Golden Ball, his team wins the tournament and he is acclaimed as the latest Super Star of Football. However, it is Ronaldo of Portugal who has the last laugh; his team does not make it even to the last four of the World Cup, but he moves to Saudi Arabia with a contract of 200 million Euros to become the highest-ever paid footballer in the history of the game. That is soccer for you!
The 2022 World Cup was Lionel Andres Messi’s appearance for a fifth consecutive World Cup, and being already on the wrong side of 35, in all probability, it was expected to be his last appearance in any World Cup. With so many trophies won by him, it may have been a cruel end to a glorious career to end his career without a World Cup win. Diego Maradona was Argentina’s first football super star when the country won the World Cup due to his winning goal, but though his motherland may have condoned him for a goal that came off a hand ball with the referee unable to detect the foul, fortunately, Messi and Argentina’s victory in 2022 has been without any such blemish.
